Methylene Blue is a phenothiazine compound with well-characterised redox cycling properties. It functions as an electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, accepting electrons from NADH and donating them to cytochrome c, bypassing complexes I–III. Research has examined its neuroprotective effects via reduction of amyloid aggregation and tau phosphorylation, its role in nitric oxide scavenging, and its capacity to improve mitochondrial function under conditions of metabolic impairment.
