MOTS-C (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA Type-c) is a mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded in the mitochondrial genome. It activates AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase), the master metabolic regulator, which shifts cellular metabolism toward fat oxidation and glucose utilization. MOTS-C also regulates the folate-methionine cycle, influencing cellular methylation and the NAD+ pathway. It enhances mitochondrial function, improves insulin sensitivity, and has been shown to mimic the metabolic benefits of exercise at the cellular level.
